Anglia-based millionaire Kenneth Medawar has commissioned a version of Wolfgang Petersen's 1981 war epic Das Boot in which the likeness of Juergen Prochnow, who plays benighted Submarine Captain Lehmann-Willenbrock, will be digitally replaced by that of Damon Albarn, former lead vocalist with Blur.
The retouching is to be undertaken by Weta Digital, the New Zealand-based firm responsible for much of the CGI in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Neither Weta Digital nor Medawar himself, who made his fortune in pelmets and curtain accessories, was available to explain the tycoon's bizarre commission.
Oxfam spokesperson Irungu Houghton has pubicly slammed the move as "an inexplicable and desperately irresponsible act of ostentatious indulgence. I don't see what possible good a version of Das Boot featuring Damon Albarn will do for the world. There are literally thousands of charitable ways to spend seven million pounds. Why Mr. Medawar has chosen such a quixotic and wasteful one, I do not know."
Albarn himself has also voiced his disapproval of the project, despite having given legal permission for his image to be used, and having received an estimated £400,000 copyright fee as a result.
Weta Digital began the project several months ago, though only announced their involvement today. It is estimated that the digitally retouched version will take at least two years to complete. There are no plans to release the new version in cinemas or on DVD.
