Los Angeles County, CA: Compton resident Ramón Gutierrez (25) died in hospital yesterday after being stabbed twice in the abdomen with an Apple Macbook Air laptop. LA County Sheriff's Office are questioning two men over the incident but have yet to make an arrest.
The Macbook Air was released by Apple last month amid much hype, the computer being the thinnest on the market. Several sociologists expressed early concerns that the laptop could be used as a weapon, as its lateral edges are sharp enough to pierce human skin.
Apple spokesperson Ellen Doppler told The Ferret that the company "deeply regrets the incident, and deplores its products being used for any violent purpose. The Macbook Air was designed as a stylish on-the-move media machine with desktop specs, not as a stabbing implement."
US Correspondent Petra Meighan adds: In what critics see as a cynical exploitation of a tragedy, Dell Computers were quick to slam Apple for releasing the Macbook Air despite warnings about its misuse. The computer giant, whose PCs are in direct competition with Apple's Macbook range, has recently launched the Pachytron, the world's thickest laptop at 24" x 12" x 24". Dell's press release claims that "the Pachytron's gargantuan dimensions make it safe to use in even the most gang-ridden neighborhoods."
