Scientists Abandon Quest to Discover Where Sun Goes At Night
 | | The sun immerses itself in an ocean |
It ranks as one of the most perplexing mysteries science has yet to uncover, and has racked inquiring minds for millennia. It happens every day, we can predict its timing to the millisecond, and yet the scientific community has failed to fully explain where the sun goes at night.
Despite a research budget topping $20m per annum and a diverse team of scientific experts, American research body SHINE (Sun Hiding In Night Enquiry) last week conceded failure, announcing on its website that "the time has come to accept defeat. We have worked hard and brought all our knowledge and insight to bear, but have come up empty. It may be the case that mankind will never know where the sun goes at night."
Among the far-fetched theories bruited by SHINE, but ultimately rejected, are:
- The sun hangs just below the horizon using 'solar hooks', structured flares of electromagnetism which prevent the star from falling underneath the earth
- The sun immerses itself in the sea (see picture above), causing ocean levels to rise by both a) increasing temperature and melting polar ice, and b) the displacement of its volume in water by the Archimedes principle
- When out of immediate view, the sun travels at dizzying velocities to points all over the galaxy and beyond, explaining what appear to be 'other' stars in the night sky
- The sun 'sleeps' inside the earth's crust, heating its core and causing the geysers and hot springs seen in Iceland, Yellowstone Park and elsewhere
The complete list of their rejected hypotheses can be found on their website.
