Exclusive and gentrified suburb Hampstead Garden in the Borough of Barnet, London, has a numerically negative population of blacks and Asians, according to a report commissioned by the Home Office in December last year.
"It is an idiosyncrasy of some of the advanced statistical methods we employ," explains Stuart Brownley of the UK Statistics Commission (who conducted the study for the Home Office), "that negative demographics can sometimes appear. It is not an error; it is mathematically valid. Hampstead has an official black and Asian population of minus 328, which means that even if 328 blacks or Asians were to move into the area tomorrow, it would still be an entirely white neighbourhood."
Negative minority demographics (NMDs) are in fact common in census tallies and statistical findings, and are frequently correlated with areas boasting high property prices and fashionable reputations. "I will not say we are proud of these statistics," says Hampstead Garden resident Emily Childress, "but they are certainly noteworthy." When asked how she would feel about the suburb becoming more racially diverse, Ms. Childress replied, "It would be wonderful! We would be delighted to welcome ethnic people into our neighbourhood. Up to 328 of them."
